José Carrillo has served as Chief Data Officer since September 2020 after joining CDCB in July 2018 as Genomic Data Manager. He obtained his doctorate in Veterinary Sciences in 1995 at the National University of Asunción in Paraguay and has an MBA from the Polytechnic University of Cataluña, Spain (1998). His research specialized mainly in livestock breeding and genetic improvements.
José served as a university professor for 10 years and joined the University of Maryland as a Faculty Research Assistant in 2007. In 2011, he graduated with a Master’s degree in Animal Science (Quantitative genetics and animal breeding), and in 2016, he earned a Ph.D. (genomics and epigenomics). Prior to joining CDCB, he worked as a geneticist at PIC.
Knowing an animal’s ancestry several generations back is certainly the goal for breeders; however, there are instances where animals have a gap in their pedigree. To fill in more pedigree gaps, CDCB is implementing a new solution starting in February 2023.
The genomic selection program for dairy cattle in the United States has doubled the rate of genetic gain.
The national cooperator database hit a new mark on February 19, 2022, with six million genotypes recorded.
